In 1981, the first low-cost airline was launched in the USA: People Express. At first it was very successful and took over all the domestic flights of the Boeing 737-100 of the German Lufthansa. New aircraft were needed, so People Express turned to Alitalia and acquired u.a. the "original Jumbo" registrated as I-DEMA in 1981, known as "Neil Armstrong" because it was dedicated to the famous astronaut. In 1984 the registration changed to N603PE.
